For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6, NIV
I’ll admit the world events of the past week (and let’s face it, the last couple years) have been troubling. If you’re like me, sometimes it’s hard to know how to respond. I wish there was more I could do to make it all better. Instead, I’m learning to make some intentional choices.
Choose Faith Over Fear
It’s tempting to worry about the unknown. The world is ending, the sky is falling, etc. Are there any other strategic thinkers who are really good at the “what if” game? I have to remember that God is still in control, He’s not surprised by anything that happens in this world, especially among heads of state. AND He tells us over and over again “do not be afraid!” Faith is a choice, even if it’s a daily one.
Accept What I Can’t Control
I’m pretty sure most of us are closet control freaks. But there’s pretty much nothing I can do to change the situation in Ukraine right now. But I can do something about the situation in front of me. I believe more is out of our control than we realize, but more is within our control than we realize as well. So part of being able to live (and hopefully thrive) in reality is being quick to accept it for what it is.
Focus on My Purpose
When the world seems to be disrupted and so many people experience needless pain, it’s easy to discredit the work we’re doing. The things we’re working on seem so insignificant. I don’t think God sees it that way. He called each person for a purpose. People still need quality healthcare. They still need someone to prepare their taxes or manufacture their automobiles or teach their children. If God put work in front of us, let’s not let the worries of today distract us from carrying it out in the service of others.
In my heart I know being “called by God” means I have access to soul peace that no one else has, if I just choose to access it. Let’s choose it this week!
